Texas Poitou Donkeys

Poitou - You say it like PWAH-TOO

BAUDET DU POITOU

More rare than Black Rhinos and Giant Pandas, it’s estimated only 70 purebred Poitou donkeys are left in America, and fewer than 500 remain throughout the world. This ancient breed from the 1700’s was developed in the Poitou region of west France.

Saving the Poitou

With so few pureblood Poitou left in the world it is critical we do our part to save this heritage breed. We believe the first steps to do this are exposure, education and getting a true census on how many Poitou are in America and their bloodlines.

We have partnered with The Livestock Conservancy to launch the Archer/Jones  Poitou Donkey American Census.

 POITOU IN PRINT

We have been extremely fortunate to have some really cool folks take up our cause to expose and educate their readers about the Poitou Donkey and our conservation efforts.

Our Story

Learn about the men and donkeys behind Texas Poitou Donkeys

Patrick Archer

Christopher Jones

What began as a fluke has turned into a full time labor of love. While driving through a pasture we encountered our first ever Poitou “Fifi” that was the start of our journey with this magnificent breed. It has taken 15 years to acquire the herd we have today from all across the United States and Canada. We feel honored to take care of these incredible animals and play even a small role in their conservation.

Trying our luck with Spencer du Capstone covering Papillon and Kamala. He is an enthusiastic breeder with the worst aim ever. Next step if he is unable to hit the target will be hand breeding and or semen collection. #rarebreed #poitoudonkey #texaspoitoudonkeys #savethepoitoudonkey ... See MoreSee Less

Come on Spencer, we need your bloodline to carry on.

He's not alone. Maybe all that enthusiasm is too much excitement. Maybe he's not coordinated. Have a few stories about how jacks "miss"

Bless his heart ❤️ he's trying

All that hair, hard to tell which end is which 😂😂

What's that saying about bulls, " something about not running to the heifers and waste energy but walk slow and get them all.

You know sometimes you just got to give a friend that "helping hand"

It truly would be safer for all involved.

Chiropractor, training, exercise, farrier. It takes development to get their strength to where they can do it properly, it’s quite strenuous on their back end.

My little mini jack is a bit like this - he tries every possible angle and misses time after time!

poor dude.

aaaawwww public shaming!!! Poor guy! Give him time!

🤞 🤞 👍 👍

Daisy du Vermont & Bertrand. We use a grazing muzzle when first introducing the jennet and jack. It limits the jack’s ability to bite and grab hold. The muzzle is left on until we see a successful breeding then things calm down considerably. #poitoudonkey #texaspoitoudonkeys #savethepoitoudonkey #farmlife #safetyfirst ... See MoreSee Less

Did Daisy Du come from Vermont?

This is actually a great idea!

Bertrand is the dad to my two baby boys we recently got from Teresa @ Tee-Spud ❣️❣️❣️ I love them beyond words!

Bertrand is such a lovely chunk. Just love the thickness of bone.

That’s a great idea. I’ll remember that next spring when I put my mini jack back in with the girls.

Why is she clapping? How old is she?

I do that too with my mini donkeys.

I want a pair so badly

Love these beauties

Bertrand is such a handsome dude!

Bert looks great!

My neighbor I board from has a mini donkey... I will NEVER have one. Their poop stinks so bad, and they're not clean with it. They pee from the bottom, so they're always splash filthy. They're constantly in the way whether you're coming or going and they're hella sneaky and stubborn, constantly trying to get into the feed stall and kill themselves on alfalfa they can't have. And to boot she loves shoving the handles of the wheelburry up her vagina. Just THE MOST USELESS ANIMAL.

Think you have a Poitou…

How do you know for sure? A good place to start is by comparing your donkey with the French Conformation Standard.
